Orthotics: What are they?

Orthotics are customized footwear inserts that is prescribed by a doctor. It is specifically made for the individual to treat foot, leg or back problems.

What Problems Can Orthotics Fix?

Doctors can prescribe Orthotics that can fix some of the following problems:

  • Arthritis. Orthotics can treat discomfort in the feet and correct poor foot positioning.

  • Back pain. Poor foot positioning, such as inward-rolling arches, or poor cushioning can cause lower back pain. Orthotics can provide cushioning and correct arches to lessen this pain.

  • Diabetes. Orthotics help reduce excess stress that leads to foot ulcers.

  • Flat feet. Orthotics help support proper foot positioning to prevent foot, ankle and back pain caused by flat feet.

  • Plantar fasciitis. As a common cause of heel pain, Orthotics are used to support the heel and foot.

  • High arches. This can cause shin splints, plantar fasciitis and knee pain due to the high amount of stress placed on the muscles in the feet. Orthotics are used to prevent a person's feet from excessively rolling inward or outward.
